Skyrim Special Edition: The Best PS4 Mods You Can Get
After a bit of back and forth and lots of deliberation, Sony and Bethesda finally agreed to the implementation of mods on PS4 releases. While we all know that Skyrim offers hours of adventure, you can expand your journey with a handful of amazing mods. Here are the best Skyrim: Special Edition mods available right now.
Ys Spell Tweaks
This mod is perfect for all of you mages out there. Thanks to a few tweaks to spell mechanics, you’ll be able to cast faster, have stronger abilities, and it removes any unnecessarily annoying animations from the casting experience.
Even Better Quest Objectives
This is a pretty straightforward mod that is actually very useful, especially for players journeying into Skyrim for the first time. Instead of just having to rely on the map, you’ll be given detailed descriptions of what to do so you don’t get lost following floating arrows.
Point the Way in Skyrim
Want to travel through Skyrim but don’t want to keep bringing up your map for fear of breaking the immersion? Point the Way fixes that by placing hundreds of road signs and even having them pointed in the right directions. No more pause menus for you.
God Gear
So you just want to run through cities killing everything and fearing nobody? Then you might want to throw on some God Gear which is just a set of armor and weapons that have some ridiculously powerful enchantments.

If you’re the opposite of the players who want God Gear and want nothing more than a brutal, soul-crushing world, then you may want to check out the Mortal Wounds mod. All combat becomes fast and deadly, and the lack of health regen means you’ll have to be careful how you approach danger and keep a healthy supply of potions.
Disable Cinematic Kills
Cinematic Kills are jaw dropping when you first encounter them, but can start to weigh down on you as you start to pile on the hours. Eventually, they’ll just be an obstacle slowing you down as you carve your way through Skyrim leaving death in your wake, so this mod that disables them will certainly prove to be handy.
Go Away Map Clouds!
Looking at Skyrim’s map will become a constant activity, so it would be great if it was always clear and easy to see. This mod removes those pesky clouds so you can see clearly once more.
Dovahkiin Keep
This is a simple mod that grants you a huge manor full of mannequins and storage for all of your armor and weapons.

Note: All of the content below worked on the PS3 version of the game. Most of the content below will still work on the PS4 version, but some of the exploits may have been fixed. Please let us know about any of the content that does not work below.
Infinite skill level gainThis trick requires that you own a house with an alchemy lab. Obtain the Oghma Infinium book, but do not read it. Go to your house, and open the bookshelf. Read the Oghma Infinium book, then select the skill set to assign the skill gain. Close the book, but not the bookshelf. Store the book on the shelf, then take the book back off the shelf, and select it, but do not read it. Repeat this as many times as desired to get as much skill level gain as desired.
Duplicating apparel itemsPlace any apparel item (armor or jewelry for best results) on a mannequin. Then, put the item back into your inventory. Leave the location of the mannequin, and go to a different area (for example, exit a house), then return to the mannequin to find the item still on the mannequin, which you can then take. Repeat this as many times as desired.
Duplicating booksThis trick requires that you own a house with an alchemy lab. Activate the bookshelf, then place the desired book to be duplicated on it. Leave the menu, then immediately activate the bookshelf again. If your book has not yet physically appeared on the shelf, wait at the menu screen where you can loot the bookshelf. Once you see the book in front of you (it will hover in front of the shelf while the menu is open), loot the book from the shelf in the menu. Immediately close the menu, and you can click on the book itself to read and then take it. You will now have looted the book twice, putting two of them in your inventory. Repeat this as many times as desired. It is especially useful with expensive books such as the Oghma Infinium.
Easy experienceWhen you reach the part in the tutorial at the beginning of the game where you choose to enter the keep with either Hadvar or Ralof, choose Hadvar, Have Hadvar cut the bindings off your hands. Grab the iron sword off the wall in the room. Then, simply keep hitting Hadvar with the sword as he stands by the door to keep leveling up the One-Handed skill. Once you knock him down, make sure to not hit him anymore until he gets back up. To level up the Sneak skill, keep sneaking up on Hadvar while he stands by the door, and then attack him with the sword. Do this for the first 32 levels. Once you reach level 33 for the Sneak skill, you can simply sit behind him and hit him with the sword every six seconds. To level up the Two-Handed skill, progress a little further in the game, and get the two-handed sword. Once you reach the area with the bear where Hadvar gives you the bow and arrow, keep hitting Hadvar with the two-handed sword to easily level up the Two-Handed skill. Note: Do not press [Sneak] while doing this or Hadvar will move on. To level up the Destruction skill, keep burning Hadvar. If you leveled the One-Handed, Sneak, Two-Handed, and Destruction skills to level 100 using this method, you should have 37 perk points and be at level 37 to start the game.
Go to Riverwood village, and find Alvor & Sigrid's house. Inside is a man named Hadvar. Rest until it is after 8 a.m. so Alvor leaves the house. Sigrid and the young girl should remain downstairs, and Hadvar will be upstairs. If he is not, just wait until he comes upstairs. Then, save the game just in case there is a problem during the next part. Equip your strongest sword or weapon that you want to increase the skill level for, and sneak behind him until he cannot see you. Do a heavy strike, and he will stumble to the floor. When he gets up, he will have no knowledge that you hit him. He also never dies, so it can be done indefinitely. Repeat the process to level up as much as desired. This will also maximize your Sneak skill, and whatever weapon type you are using.
Easy goldTake a horse and carriage to Winterhold. Once in Winterhold, immediately turn right. Travel southwest from Winterhold to a location called 'Sightless Pit'. Just above Slightless Pit on the mountain is an alter with a skeleton on it. Beside the skeleton is a book called 'The Doors To Oblivion'. Pick up the book, and then kill the skeleton on the table. Two other skeletons will rise around the alter; kill them as well. Return to the skeleton near where you picked up the book, and loot its body, taking everything. Loot it again, and you will notice the book on the skeleton keeps reappearing. You can keep taking 'The Doors Of Oblivion' book worth 50 gold each. Every time you view the Skeleton's inventory, even if you do not take the book, it should add one book to the skeleton's inventory. Repeat this as much as desired.
At any time, go to Dawnstar. Once in Dawnstar, locate the entrance to the Iron-Breaker Mine, but do not enter it. To the left of the entrance are some rocks around a tree. Walk under the tree, and aim your crosshairs around the edges of the rocks until 'Search Chest' appears. Open it to find a large amount of free loot, including crafting supplies, weapons, armor, enchanted items, gold, and more. Note: The chest is invisible as it sits under the ground, but it is still lootable. Loot everything, then sell the items for a large sum of gold. It is recommended you bring a horse, as you will quickly become over-encumbered and unable to move quickly or fast travel. To reset the chest and get more loot, go back to the entrance to Dawnstar. You will see a Khajiit trader caravan. If the caravan is not there, wait a few days for it to return. Look for the Khajiit named 'Ahkari'. Save the game while looking at her, then attack her after saving. It is not necessary to kill her, as damaging her should be enough. Then, reload the saved game file, and talk to her. Ask to see her wares, then exit the 'Trade' menu, and return to the invisible chest by the mine. Repeat this process as many times as desired.
When doing the quest to get married, marry a follower. Then, make them follow you and trade items. They should have 750 gold because of the store they run. Take their gold, leave, and wait one day to get more gold. Repeat this as many times as desired.
While doing the quests to get the 'One With The Shadows' trophy, you will get a special request for Windhelm called 'Summerset Shadows'. Once you have completed this quest, Niranye will have 4,000 gold on her every two days. Keep stealing as much gold from her as desired. It is possible to steal almost 145,000 gold in thirty minutes. This also is an easy way to get the 'Golden Touch' trophy.
At the beginning of the game, when you reach the first town of Riverwood, find Hod. He usually stands at the top of the sawmill during the day. He will pay you for as much wood as you can give him. There is no limit to how much you can make by chopping wood and selling it to him, as he never runs out of gold like the merchants. Chop and sell as much wood to him as desired for easy gold.
Easy gold and Alchemy and Speech skillsThis trick requires some time to set up, but once it is done, you can get as much gold as desired. It requires the following:
- 1. Fortify Alchemy Enchantment
- 2. Helmet, gloves/bracers, two rings, and a necklace
- 3. Five Grand Soul Gems filled with Grand Souls. Grand Souls can be taken from Mammoths or bought.
- 4. The ingredients for Fortify Restoration potions: Abecean Longfins, Cyrodilic Spadetails, and Salt Piles. The fish can be obtained easily by swimming around Goldenglow Estate near Riften. Collect as many of these as you can, at least ten to fifteen of each ingredient.
- 5. Ingredients for a Fortify Enchanting potion: Snowberries, Spriggan Sap, Hagraven Claw, and Blue Butterfly Wing.
Start by enchanting your helmet, gloves, one of the rings, and the necklace with Fortify Alchemy using the Grand Soul Gems. It works best if your Enchanting is at 100 with five perks in Enchanter. Equip the newly fortified equipment. Go to an alchemy lab, and create a potion of Fortify Restoration. Exit and drink the potion. Without exiting the menu, go to 'Apparel', unequip, and re-equip the gear. Then, create another Fortify Restoration potion. Drink it, unequip, and re-equip the gear until you can craft very strong Fortify Restorations (in the millions of percent). If you go too high, the potions will start getting negative numbers. Do not drink those or the game will glitch. When you are satisfied with the strength of your potions, drink one, then craft a Fortify Enchanting potion. Go to an Arcane Enchanter, drink your Fortify Enchanting potion, and enchant the remaining ring with Fortify Alchemy. This negates the need to repeat this process. Then, go to any apothecary, and buy a Giants Toe and some Wheat. While wearing your ring, craft a potion using these two ingredients. You should get a massive increase in Alchemy. It will be worth hundreds of thousands of Septim. No merchant will have that much money, but sell it to them for whatever they can pay, and your Speech will rise to 100. If it does not raise your Speech skill to 100, make another potion, and repeat. After your Speech is leveled, add perks until you get to the 'Invest' perk. Go to the Riverwood trader, and invest in him. Go outside, and wait 48 hours. Return, and he will have 10,000 Septim. Sell him a potion to get all his gold. Go outside, and wait another 48 hours. Return, and sell him a potion to get all his gold. Repeat this as many times as desired. It is possible to get over 100,000 Septim in ten minutes in exchange for the cost of making the potions.
Easy gold and Enchanting and Smithing skillsNote: This trick requires a Soul Trap weapon and access to a smith and arcane enchanter. First, purchase an equal number of Iron Ingots, Leather Strips, and Petty Soul Gems. Fill the Petty Soul Gems (by killing with the Soul Trap weapon), then go to a smith. Create as many Iron Daggers as possible, then go to an arcane enchanter (there is one in Dragonsreach). Enchant all the daggers with the Petty Soul Gems (disenchant the Soul Trap weapon, if required). Go to a shop, and sell the daggers. Depending on your barter skill, you will make approximately 170 gold per dagger in profit, and will level up your Enchanting and Smithing skills. Note: Smith every three or four daggers, and enchant every one or two daggers early on.
Easy super weapons and armorThis trick requires the necessary perks in the Alchemy, Enchanting, and Smithing skills. First, enchant armor/boots/gloves/etc. with alchemy boosting properties. Then, equip the enchanted gear, and create a potion that enhances your enchanting skill for a certain amount of time. Go back, drink the potion, and enchant new equipment with alchemy boosting properties again. Your new equipment will now boost your alchemy even more, which will allow you to create a potion that enhances your enchanting even more than the first potion you made. Repeat this as many times as desired. Then, create smith boosting equipment and a smith boosting potion. Go to the blacksmith, and create your gear while you have your smith boosting equipment/potion, and upgrade it to the desired stats.
Adding Fortify enchantment to a weaponThis glitch requires you have 100 enchantment and the perk that allows you to add two enchantments to a weapon. First, go to the enchantment table, and select the soul gem you wish to use. Then, choose a weapon enchantment such as Frost damage, Stamina damage, Soul Trap, etc. Select a fortify enchantment, de-select the fortify enchantment, then select it again. You should now be able to select a weapon to enchant.
Infinite arrowsPickpocket someone who shoots target dummies with arrows, and take the arrows they were using (usually iron or steel). Then, give them one of the arrow type you want more of. They will now shoot that type of arrow instead of the one they were shooting before. Simply collect the arrows as they hit the target dummy to get as many arrows as desired.
After killing the first dragon and being appointed Thane of Whiterun, talk to the new house earl, and trade items with them. Give them one arrow from your best set of arrows, then remove their sword, and assign them a bow. Every time you go into battle, they will fire multiple arrows from the one you traded. Then, collect all of the arrows after the battle is over.
Infinite weight limitContainers are persistent and items do not disappear. Thus, any barrel, box, or chest can be used to store your items. It works best to use containers near a quick travel loading location. However, since the game is buggy, your items probably will not disappear when placed in a random barrel or chest, but there is no way to guarantee they will not disappear unless you purchase a house and store your items in it.
Easy armor, spells, and general experienceSet the difficulty to 'Novice', and have a weak one-handed attack enemy hit you while healing. This will level the armor you are wearing, Restoration, and also may level up Illusion.
Easy experience and Illusion skillMost spells require you to actively use them in combat situations or on specific objects to progress, but the Muffle spell does not require this. Muffle is an Illusion spell that quiets your movements. Continually cast Muffle while you are walking around the world of Skyrim to boost your Illusion skill and increase your overall experience.
Easy Archery skillGo to Riverwood, find an elf named Faendal, and then deliver a note to Camilla. Next, find Faendal, and ask him to follow you. Make sure you have at least 200 gold. Ask him to train you. When he does, ask him to trade with you. Go into his inventory, and take your money back. You can do this five times a level, and it really helps early in the game. Repeat this as much as desired.
Easy Blocking skillUse the following trick to level up your Blocking skill or save a few spare perks. Find a weak enemy that does not enter water (for example, a wolf). Pin yourself between the enemy and the water, then use a rubber band to hold the trigger button that controls your shield for as long as desired to keep leveling up the Blocking skill. Note: Make sure the enemy will not move from where he is attacking you.
Easy Conjuration skillTo get your Conjuration skill from Level 1 to 99 in approximately 1 to 2 hours, first complete the Dark Brotherhood questline. To begin the Dark Brotherhood questline, talk to the children in Honorhall Orphanage in Riften. Speak with Aventus Aretino in Windhelm to begin the faction quests. Purchase the Torture Room in the Dark Brotherhood hideout near Dawnstar. Purchase the Soul Bind spell. In the Torture Room, use the Soul Bind spell on the prisoners to reveal hidden treasure locations. Keep casting Soul Bind on the prisoners, as there is no penalty for continuously using the spell. Rest once you run out of mana, or wait for your mana pool to regenerate, then keep casting the spell. Repeat this as many times as desired. Note: This has been tested and confirmed to work with the Special Edition version of the game.
Buy or steal a horse. You can get one in Whiterun. Learn the Soul Trap spell. Then, use the Soul Trap spell on your horse. It will not harm your horse, but it will keep leveling up the Conjuration skill. Repeat this as much as desired.
This trick works best with the Bound Sword spell, as you are able to conjure two of these at the same time to gain experience faster. This works best when there is an enemy that is trying to fight you, but you are at an area that they cannot reach you (for example, fighting a troll or bear while you are too high for them to actually hit you). Use the Bound Sword spell, put the sword(s) away, then repeat the process to level up your Conjuration skill quickly.
This trick requires dragons roaming around and being far enough in The Dark Brotherhood to have Shadowmere. When you find where a dragon is located, fast travel there so Shadowmere can be with you. Start the battle with the dragon, but do not worry when the dragon goes after Shadowmere, as Shadowmere is invincible and will fight and eventually kill the dragon for you. While he is fighting the dragon, use the Bound Sword spell, put the sword(s) away, then repeat the process to level up your Conjuration skill quickly.
Easy Destruction skillWhen you join the Fighter's Guild, you will be prompted to go outside and duel with one of the members. When you are outside, switch to destruction magic, and use it against the opponent repeatedly. He will keep telling you to use a sword, but you will gain experience, and he will not die. Repeat this as much as desired to get easy XP for magic.
Easy Pickpocket skillGo to jail in Riften, then unlock your cell door. Directly across from your cell is a guy named Black-Briar. You can pickpocket him even after he catches you. Pickpocket all of his stuff, then place it back into his inventory. Repeat this as many times as desired to easily increase your Pickpocket skill level.
Easy Restoration skillGo to High Hrothgar. Go out the door to the area where you are taught the Whirlwind Sprint, then go to the right. Look for a small staircase that goes up to a blizzard of some kind. Go forward just enough to start getting hurt by it, then start using the Healing spell. Your health will go down slowly because you are using the healing spell, but you will also gain experience. This method is better than fighting an enemy and leveling up your experience since you can control how much damage you are taking by simply walking backwards.
Easy Smithing and Speech skillEvery time you go to a forge, make sure to talk to the person in charge of it, and buy all the iron ingot and leather or leather strips they are selling. Then, make as many leather strips as it takes for each iron ingot. Take it to the forge, and make an iron dagger that only takes one of each ingredient to create. If you sell it back to the merchant, sell it one at a time so you create more transactions to level up the Speech skill.
Easy Sneak skillAt the beginning of the game, you will encounter a sleeping bear in Helgen's Keep. Hadvar will say you can either sneak past it or kill it. Just off to the left of where Hadvar stops is a small rock pile. Go to the back side of it, and you can sneak in the crevice there and remain hidden from the bear. Keep sneaking at the rock to increase your Sneak skill level. Repeat this for a long as desired, as the bear will only move if it detects you. To make sure you are in a good location, sneak for a short time, then check your Sneak skill to see if it is rising. If not, move slightly closer to the bear and keep trying.
After the prologue part of the game, go to Embershard Mine. Kill the two bandits in the first chamber of the mine, then go into the short tunnel. Lower the bridge by pulling the nearby switch (explore along the tunnel on the far wall from the entrance). Continue through the next few rooms until you reach an area with a bandit in a sort of pit (the pit has a forge in it). Kill the bandit in the pit to attract the attention of the guard on the bridge. She will start shooting arrows at you. Hide about half way down the bridge in the shadows, and just keep walking into the wall while sneaking to easily level up your Sneak skill.
Reach White Run, and go east. Move toward the mountain until you find White River Watch. Kill the two bandits outside, and enter. The blind guy inside will ask if you are Ralph. Say yes, and then keep walking into the wall in the shadows while sneaking to easily keep leveling up your Sneak skill. You can also place a rubber band around the Analog-stick and controller and leave it for a few hours to keep leveling up while you are away.
Once you can go to Bleak Falls Barrow, go there, and talk to Sven about his love troubles with a girl. Accept to deliver a fake letter to the girl he mentions. Find the girl, and deliver the letter to her. Then, go to Faendal, and accept the 'Golden Claw' quest. Go back to Sven, and talk to him about the quest. Tell him to follow you, then sneak behind Sven, and sneak attack him. Repeat this as many times as desired to easily level up the Sneak skill, the weapon skill for the weapon you have equipped, and general experience. Note: Make sure you do not kill Sven. Sven will get mad at you when you keep attacking him, but he will never try to attack you back. Additionally, make sure to not get the perk that increases one-handed weapons to do 6x damage or the sneak attack will kill Sven.
Once you can reach the Greybeards at High Hrothgar, keep sneaking behind one of the Greybeards, and wait until you become undetected. Then, attack them, and keep repeating this as many times as desired. The Greybeards will not attack you, and this is not considered a crime. Additionally, you can use a weapon while you attack them, but there is a chance you will kill them. It works best while unarmed.
Easy Speech skillGo to Riften, and talk to the Dark Elf named Ungrien. Choose the 'Tell me about Maven Black-Briar.' option, and then select the persuade option. After that, the persuade option will not disappear, allowing you to keep selecting it as many times as desired to get easy experience and max out your Speech skill.
Easy stealingTo steal any item, simply grab a basket, bucket, kettle, or any other type of container. Then, place it over the head of the NPC that owns the item(s). While the container is over their head, they will not be able to see you as you steal the desired item(s). Note: This trick does not work for pick pocketing. It only works for stealing items off counters, shelves, etc. Additionally, there are a few, select NPC's that will not allow you to put a container over their head.
Simply move an item you wish to steal out of the owner's view by kicking it. Once the item is out of view of the owner, you can steal it without getting caught or penalized.
Easy weapon experienceWhen the Blades asks you to kill Paarthurnax, approach him to check if he is on the stone wall perfectly. Attack him with any desired weapon or destruction magic to increase it. If he dies, restart and try again. If done correctly, he will just keep taking the hits, then fly up and back down. He will never die, and you will not get any bounties for attacking him.
Free trainingGet any skill trainer as your follower, and train your skills with him. Then, ask him to trade, and take the gold you gave him back.
To get costly (especially on later levels) training for free, enter any guild where there are trainers in what you need, and gain their trust. Get the desired training you need from the trainer, and then pickpocket him (your money for the training will be in his pocket). It would normally be considered a crime, but the guild will not do anything about it or report it.
Free house in WhiterunYou normally would need 5,000 gold to buy the house in Whiterun, but this trick allows you to get it for free. Go to the man who sells you the house in Whiterun while he is asleep in his bed. He will sit up to talk to you. Make sure you are standing in a place that you can open the nightstand or dresser next to the bed while you are talking to him. As soon as you agree to buy the house, immediately open the dresser next to the bed, and put your gold into it, and return to the conversation. He will give you the key, and then you can simply take your gold back out of the dresser.
Getting items from display cases without lockpicksThis trick works on any item within a locked display case. Look directly at the item through the display case glass, then press X to activate the lockpick mini-game. Instead of actually picking the lock, press Circle to exit the lockpicking screen, then immediately press X. If done correctly, you will take the item from within the case without having to unlock the display case. For example, you can use this trick on the Elven Sword in the display case in Jarl Balgruuf's bed chamber area in Dragonsreach. It has a Master level lock, but this trick allows you to get it without even picking the lock. Note: This is still considered stealing in most cases; thus, try not to get caught.

Go to Falkreath, and find the smith named Lod. He will ask you to find his dog. You can find the dog, Barbas, outside of the village, and it will take you to the Shrine of Clavicus Vile. Once you speak with the Daedra Lord, the dog will accompany you until you finish the 'A Daedra's Best Friend' quest. Since the dog is considered a quest item, it cannot be killed. It will automatically attack enemies who approach you, but it will not lose any health. Note: You can also take another companion in addition to the dog.
Restocking any merchant's items and goldTo instantly refill any merchant's stock and gold, simply sell or buy anything from them. Then, save the game, kill the merchant, and load the saved game.

Larger teamUse the following trick to get a three person team with a five person squad. Have your main character ask Brelyan Maryon to join you after doing her side quest. Give her the Staff of Conjure Flame Atronach. Then, do the 'Taste Of Death' quest, and convince Verulus to follow. You should now have a total of three characters. When in combat, summon your familiar and have Maryon summon hers. There will now be five of you in battle. This makes the game easier when doing almost all side quests. In some side quests other characters will also join you, increasing your squad. Note: If you complete Mercer Frey's 'Scoundrel's Folly' quest, he will ask you to join him in another quest. When you accept it, you will now have four members in your team. You can travel to do quests with all four members, and when in battle your squad will increase to seven with conjuration abilities.
Floating boxesAt random times in the game, the shopkeepers of Whiterun (and possibly elsewhere) will sell a 'Miscellaneous' item called 'Do Not Delete'. It appears to be a common treasure chest, but they have no laws of gravity applied to them, like the paintbrushes in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. Thus, when you drop them, they float wherever your cursor was. Purchase two of them to get into areas you could not reach before, or even create a stairway into the sky.
Keeping the Rusty Mace and Mace of Molag Bal from House Of HorrorsEquip the Rusty Mace, then click on any weapon mount in Hjerlim to remove the mace from your inventory even though it is a quest item. Finish the quest to get the mace with unlocked potential, the Mace of Molag Bal. This can be used to keep other quest weapons that are meant to be given to others, since the game thinks it is not possible that the item is not in you inventory. The quests will continue as normal even though you have kept the weapons for yourself.
Becoming a vampireWhile in combat against vampires, you have a chance of contracting vampirism each time they land a hit on you. If you contract the disease, it can be cured with any regular disease potion. However, if you wait three days, the disease will become permanent, and you will gain the powers of a vampire. There are four stages of Vampirism. The longer you go without blood, the more powerful the benefits of vampirism will become, but the weaknesses will also get worse. You can only drink blood from sleeping NPCs. As each stage of vampirism increases, some effects stay the same, while others change. The four stages of Vampirism and their effect (changes between stages are only listed) are as follows:
Stage 1
Vampires have a 25% increase to their Illusion spells. They are 25% harder for NPCs to detect, have 100% resistance to diseases or poisons, and are 25% resistant to ice.
Vampires are 25% weaker to fire, and their health, magic, and stamina stats are reduced by 15 points in the sunlight. Those three stats also do not regenerate.
Vampires have the power to reanimate the dead to serve them. They can also improve their night vision with another power.
Vampires gain a spell that allows them to drain the health of their enemies.
Stage 2
Vampires are 50% resistant to frost, and their vampiric servant and drain powers are more powerful.
Vampires are 50% weaker to fire, and their health, magic, and stamina stats are reduced by 30 points in the sunlight.
Vampires gain the 'Vampiric Seduction' power, which calms enemies (animals and people) for 30 seconds. Thus, they will not attack you.
Stage 3
Vampires are 75% resistance to ice, and their powers of reanimating the dead and draining the living become more powerful.
Vampires are 75% weaker to fire, and their health, magic, and stamina stats are reduced by 45 points in the sunlight.
Stage 4
Vampires are 100% resistant to ice, and their vampiric servant and drain powers are more powerful.
Vampires are 100% weak to fire, and their health, magic, and stamina stats are reduced by 60 points in the sunlight.
All NPCs are hostile towards Stage 4 vampires.
Vampires gain the 'Embrace Of Shadows' power, which turns your character invisible for three minutes.
You can cure vampirism by turning to werewolf or by doing the 'Rising At Dawn' quest.
Becoming a werewolf (lycanthropy)There are several benefits to becoming a werewolf. In human form, you have increased health. In werewolf form, your speed and physical strength are increased. You are able to travel faster, have claws to tear enemies apart, and can use your howl to scare enemies to run away from battle. When you get injured, you can feed on ravaged corpses as a werewolf to heal your wounds. The werewolf effect is only temporary, and you ultimately revert back to human form, but you can prolong this effect. As a werewolf, you can also avoid the rested buff from sleeping. To become a werewolf, follow the questline of The Companions Of Whiterun. Once you reach the 'Silver Hand' quest, you will take part in a secret ritual, where you drink another werewolf's blood and turn into a werewolf yourself. You will be given a choice to commit yourself, and the quest will not advance if you do not commit.
Curing lycanthropyFirst, join The Companions faction. Successfully complete all quests for The Companions faction. Then, talk to the leader of The Companions, Kodlak Whitemane, or ask around about a cure for werewolves. Speaking with Aela the Huntress in Whiterun will also tell you more about The Companions' affliction. The Companions will offer you a special quest that will cure your lycanthropy, which is a permanent change. Thus, you will never be able to become a werewolf again. Successfully complete the quest to not be a werewolf ever again.
Joining the College Of WinterholdGo to the College Of Winterhold in Winterhold. Find the Grand Teacher Tolfdir, and he will offer the 'First Lessons' quest. Successfully complete the quest to join the College Of Winterhold.
Joining The CompanionsThere is a building called Jorrvaskr in Whiterun (look east of Dragonsreach). Inside the building, enter the basement to speak with Kodlak. He will offer the 'Take Up Arms' quest. Successfully complete the quest to join The Companions faction.
Joining The Dark BrotherhoodGo to Riverwood, and speak to the bartender inside the inn. Ask him if he has heard any rumors. He will eventually tell you about a boy that is trying to summon The Dark Brotherhood. Follow the side quest to Windhelm. When entering Windhelm, take an immediate right, and travel up the path until you encounter a Dark Elf and child talking. Enter the door to their left, and find the child inside. He will ask you to kill Grinelda The Kind in Riften. Go to Riften, enter the orphanage, and kill Grinelda. Fast travel back to Windhelm, and speak to the child again to get your reward. Next, go outside of the city, and wait for 24 hours. A courier will approach, and give you a note with black handprint on it that says 'We Know'. Go to the nearest inn, rent a room, and sleep for twenty four hours. When you awake, you will have been kidnapped by one of The Dark Brotherhood. They will tell you that if you kill one of the other three people in the room, they will release you. Choose a person, and kill them. Speak to The Dark Brotherhood again, and they will tell you to meet them at their lair in the pine forest in the far southwest corner of Skyrim. Fast travel to the western watchtower outside of Whiterun, then travel west towards the marker. When you reach the door, answer the question asked with 'Silence, My Brother' to enter the sanctuary. Speak to the first person you find inside the lair, and you will now be a member of The Dark Brotherhood.
The Dark Brotherhood is the most secretive of all the factions, and can be hard to find. Start by going to bars and asking about rumors or information. Try talking to bartenders in Windhelm. Eventually you will get a tip to speak with a boy named Aventus Aretino, located in the Aretino Residence in Windhelm. You also may be able to speak with him without first receiving the rumor. Speak to the boy, and accept the 'Innocence Lost' quest. Nothing will happen immediately after completing the quest, but soon afterwards, a courier will deliver you a note. Then, sleep and you will be contacted by The Dark Brotherhood. Talk to the stranger at your bedside, and you will then be in The Dark Brotherhood secret society.
Joining the Thieves GuildFirst, enter Riften, and find Brynjolf. He is in the town square at the storefront during daylight. Talk to him, and complete his quest. Then, he will ask to meet you at a bar called the Ragged Flagon, located underneath Riften, in the Ratway. Talk to him in the Ragged Flagon to start the 'Taking Care Of Business' quest. Successfully complete the quest to become a member of The Thieves Guild.
Words of powerIf you are having problems finding words of power, go to High Hrothgar, and find Arngeir. The first talk selection will be 'Have you found a new word of power?'. He will place a new quest in the 'Misc.' category for it. He will only give you one at a time, but he will keep giving them to you until there are no more.
Dragon Claw chamber codesGo into your items, and look at a Dragon Claw. Rotate it so you can see the bottom to see the code for the door that it unlocks.
Fast traveling while over-encumberedYou are not supposed to be able to fast travel while being over-encumbered. However, if you have a horse, it is not affected by your encumbrance. Thus, you will have the option to fast travel while on your horse.
Moving faster while over-encumberedIf you are over-encumbered and far away from your destination, the fastest way to move is through the Whirlwind Sprint Shout. It can be used continuously to get you to the nearest city quickly so you can sell. This also works when exiting caves and dungeons.
When you are carrying too much to run, equip a small weapon such as a sword or dagger, and use the power swing while walking to move faster. Note: You will need some stamina to perform the power swing. Additionally, be careful not to hit anyone, as you will obtain bounty, and possible attack from the guards.
Preventing fall damageFall damage can be prevented when sliding down mountains or vertical surfaces by quickly toggling Sneak mode on and off multiple times while sticking to the surface you are descending. This will nullify any damage caused by gravity, and can be very useful if you find yourself at the top of a dangerous looking mountain without any roads to go down.
Faster horse swimmingSkyrim Remastered Special Edition Ps4
When you are going through water deep enough that your horse can swim, dismount and mount the horse to go faster.
Climbing mountainsWhen you reach a point while climbing a mountain and cannot progress forward any longer because the grade is too steep, simply face backwards and start jumping. Point your butt toward the peak, and continuously press [Jump]. It also helps to move slightly from side-to-side as you do this. You can often snag a rock along the way and shimmy up a mountain without having to use a set path. Sometimes facing forward at a 45 degree angle can also help.
Picking up skill books without reading themNormally, when you pick up a skill book that is not in a container, you will read it and gain a point in that skill. However, there is a way to avoid this by adding the book to your inventory so that you can save it for use later. This is useful for later in the game when it can be difficult to increase a skill. To use this method, you need to have a companion. When you see a skill book, talk to your companion, and select the 'I need you to do something' command. Then, put the cursor on the book, and select it. The dialog box will tell the companion to read the book, but the companion will add it to their inventory. You can then take the book from their inventory to read it and get the skill point when desired.
Dragon tomb locationUse a non-dangerous Shout in front of a guard, and a courier will deliver a letter from a 'friend', giving you the location of another dragon tomb.
Dragonreach cave puzzle solutionsInside the cave during your first mission for Dragonreach, you will have to solve a combination puzzle. Look to the wall above the closed gate. You will see two heads with a gap in the middle. Each one holds a picture of a creature (snake and dolphin). On the floor by the lever is the third creature (snake). The combination is Snake, Snake, Dolphine. The second combination is found deeper in the chambers. It is a turntable combination, which is more difficult. The solution is Bear, Owl, Bird. Insert the claw, and the door will open.
Defeating Giants easilyGet a Giant to chase you to a nearby river, then go under water, and the giant will immediately turn and walk away. When he does, sneak out, and shoot him with an arrow. When he turns around to attack, go back under the water, and he will again turn and walk away. Keep repeating this process until he is dead. Note: This is a slow process that takes a while to complete.

Bethesda have announced that PC gamers can get the new Skyrim: Special Edition remaster free of charge, so long as they already own a copy of Skyrim with all its DLC.
If you’re a Skyrim fan, chances are you already own a copy of Bethesda’s open-world RPG. Well for those of you playing on PC, it’s your lucky day as the developers will be giving out free copies of the newly announced Skyrim: Special Editionto all those who own a copy of the original game and all of its DLC.
Skyrim Special Edition Ps4
Bethesda announced its intention to offer an upgrade to the Skyrim experience on Twitter. To take part in the offer, a player must own a copy of the Skyrim core game with all add-ons, or simply own the Legendary Edition.
It has not been announced so far as to whether the company will be offering a similar deal to console owners, though there is still time before the October 28 release date.
Skyrim: Special Edition is a remaster of the 2011 addition to TheElder Scrolls main series, coming with numerous graphical enhancements such as remastered art and effects, volumetric god rays, and adding dynamic depth of field made to the base game’s already impressive visuals. The game will also offer modding on console, with the trailer showing the interface looking very similar to Fallout 4‘s newly-implemented mod support.
So far it is unclear as to whether there will be any new content or features coming with the Skyrim: Special Edition, other than the obvious graphical improvements, but even without any other changes, the new version of the game still looks impressive enough to warrant a second purchase from even the most casual of fans.
The announcement of the new Skyrim remaster wasn’t exactly a surprise, with rumors having been floating around the Internet for a week at this point. That said, fans appear very excited about jumping back into the world of Skyrim this October, complete with all of the game’s DLC and upgraded graphics. PC users have always been able to make use of mods to the game, which technically should let them play with superior graphics right now, though the difference here is that these enhancements have been made officially by the people at Bethesda and will likely have been designed to run more smoothly than the average independent modder can manage.
On top of that, modding a PC game has always been a difficult and time-consuming task, requiring fans to put in a lot of effort to get the mods working as intended. The Special Edition will help make things quicker and easier for all gamers – and that’s not a bad thing for anyone.
Skyrim: Special Edition will be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC on October 28, 2016.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011.
The game's main story revolves around the player character's quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The game is set 200 years after the events of Oblivion and takes place in Skyrim, the northernmost province of Tamriel. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open-world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.
Skyrim was developed using the Creation Engine, rebuilt specifically for the game. The team opted for a unique and more diverse open world than Oblivion's Imperial Province of Cyrodiil, which game director and executive producer Todd Howard considered less interesting by comparison. The game was released to critical acclaim, with reviewers particularly mentioning the character advancement and setting, and is considered to be one of the greatest video games of all time. Nonetheless it received some criticism, predominantly for its melee combat and numerous technical issues present at launch. The game shipped over seven million copies to retailers within the first week of its release, and over 30 million copies on all platforms as of November 2016, making it one of the highest selling video games in history.
Three downloadable content (DLC) add-ons were released--Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn—which were repackaged into The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Legendary Edition and released in June 2013. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Special Edition is a remastered version of the game released for Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 in October 2016. It includes all three DLC expansions and a graphical upgrade, along with additional features such as modding capabilities on consoles. Versions were released in November 2017 for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation VR, and a stand-alone virtual reality (VR) version for Windows was released in April 2018.

Gameplay
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an action role-playing game, playable from either a first or third-person perspective. The player may freely roam over the land of Skyrim which is an open world environment consisting of wilderness expanses, dungeons, cities, towns, fortresses, and villages.[1] Players may navigate the game world more quickly by riding horses or by utilizing a fast-travel system which allows them to warp to previously discovered locations.[2] The game's main quest can be completed or ignored at the player's preference after the first stage of the quest is finished. However, some quests rely on the main storyline being at least partially completed. Non-player characters (NPCs) populate the world and can be interacted with in a number of ways: the player may engage them in conversation, marry an eligible NPC, kill them or engage in a nonlethal 'brawl'. As in previous The Elder Scrolls games, killing certain NPCs can make some quests or items unobtainable. Some NPCs cannot be killed due to their importance in later storylines. If witnessed, crimes like murder and theft accrue the player a bounty which is tracked independently in each of Skyrim's nine holds. Should the player be stopped by a guard, they may wipe their bounty with gold or jail time or may resist arrest which will trigger an aggressive pursuit. NPCs may offer the player additional side-quests and some side-quests have parameters adjusted based on nearby dungeons which the player has yet to explore.[3][4] Some NPCs who are befriended or hired by the player may act as companions who will accompany the player and aid them in combat.[5] The player may choose to join factions which are organized groups of NPCs — for example, the Dark Brotherhood, a band of assassins.[6] Each of the factions has an associated quest path to progress through. Each city and town in the game world has jobs that the player can engage in, such as farming.[7]
The player's character engages in combat with monsters while exploring a dungeon. The player may dual-wield weapons and magic at once in order to be more effective against enemies.
Players have the option to develop their character. At the beginning of the game, players create their character by selecting their sex and choosing between one of several races including humans, orcs, elves, and anthropomorphic cat or lizard-like creatures and then customizing their character's appearance.[8] Over the course of the game, players improve their character's skills which are numerical representations of their ability in certain areas. There are eighteen skills divided evenly among the three schools of combat, magic, and stealth. When players have trained skills enough to meet the required experience, their character levels up. Each time their character levels, the players may choose to select a skill-specific ability called a perk or store perk points for later use. Earlier entries in The Elder Scrolls series used a character class system to determine which skills would contribute to the character's leveling but Skyrim allows players to discover preferred skills as they play the game and it rewards them with more experience when a frequently used skill is leveled.[3][9] A head-up display (HUD) appears when any of the player's three main attributes (health, magicka, and stamina) are being depleted. Attributes regenerate over time, although this process can be accelerated by using potions or regenerative spells. Health is depleted primarily when the player takes damage and the loss of all health results in death. Magicka is depleted by the use of spells, certain poisons and by being struck by lightning-based attacks. Stamina determines the player's effectiveness in combat and is depleted by sprinting, performing heavy 'power attacks' and being struck by frost-based attacks. The player's inventory can be accessed from the menu and items can be viewed in 3D which may prove essential in solving puzzles found in dungeons.[10]
The player's effectiveness in combat relies on the use of weapons and armor (which may be bought, found or forged) and on the use of magic spells which may be bought or unlocked by finding spell tomes. Weapons and magic are assigned to each hand allowing for dual-wielding and can be swapped out through a quick-access menu of favorite items.[11] Some weapons and master spells require both hands. Shields can be used to fend off enemy attacks and reduce incurred damage or offensively through bashing attacks. Blunt, bladed, and hacking weapons can be used in close combat and each have specific advantages and roles. For example, the player can perform power attacks with each weapon. Spells have several functions such as regenerating the player's health, attacking enemies, confusing people or creatures, temporarily raising the dead, casting light or turning iron into silver.[12] A bow and arrow may be utilized in long-range combat, but the bow can also be used as a defensive melee weapon in close combat by 'bashing'. The player can enter sneak mode and pickpocket or deliver powerful sneak attacks to unsuspecting enemies.
When exploring the game world the player may encounter wildlife. Many creatures in the wilderness are immediately hostile towards the player. However, game animals such as elk and deer will simply run away.[1]Skyrim is the first entry in The Elder Scrolls to include dragons in the game's wilderness. Like other creatures, dragons are generated randomly in the world and will engage in combat with NPCs, creatures and the player. Some dragons may attack cities and towns when in their proximity.[13] The player character can absorb the souls of dragons in order to use powerful spells called 'dragon shouts' or 'Thu'um'. Each shout contains three words in the language spoken by dragons, and the strength of the shout will vary depending on how many words have been spoken. The words to shouts can be learned by visiting 'word walls' in dungeons or around the wilderness. The words to each shout are unlocked for use by spending the absorbed souls of slain dragons.[14][15] A regeneration period limits the player's use of shouts in gameplay.[16]
Synopsis
Setting and characters
Skyrim is set around 200 years after the events of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion,[14] although it is not a direct sequel. The game takes place in Skyrim, a province of the Empire on the continent of Tamriel, amid a civil war between two factions: the Stormcloaks, led by Ulfric Stormcloak, and the Imperial Legion, led by General Tullius. The player character is a Dragonborn, a mortal born with the soul and power of a dragon. Alduin, a large black dragon who returns to the land after being lost in time, serves as the game's primary antagonist. Alduin is the first dragon created by Akatosh, one of the series' gods, and is prophesied to destroy and consume the world.
Plot
The player character is a prisoner being led to an Imperial execution in Helgen overseen by General Tullius, which includes Ulfric Stormcloak among the prisoners to be executed there. Alduin unexpectedly interrupts the procession, destroying the town before the player can be executed. The player escapes in the chaos and journeys to the city of Whiterun to request aid against the dragon threat. After slaying a dragon that attacks nearby, the player absorbs its soul, which grants them the ability to perform a shout. The city's amazed guards inform the player that they must be Dragonborn. The player is summoned to meet with the Greybeards, an order of monks who live in seclusion on Skyrim's tallest mountain, the Throat of the World. The Greybeards train the player in using shouts and inform the player of their role in stopping Alduin. The player learns that Skyrim's civil war is the last in a sequence of prophetic events foretold by the Elder Scrolls, which also predicted the return of Alduin.
The player later meets with members of the Blades, an order of dragon hunters. The player and the Blades travel to Sky Haven Temple to find a prophetic engravement on Alduin's Wall and learn that ancient Nords used a special shout against Alduin so they could engage him. To gain more information, the player meets the ancient dragon Paarthurnax, the leader of the Greybeards. Paarthurnax reveals that Alduin was cast into the currents of time by the use of an Elder Scroll in the hope that he would never reemerge. The player locates the Elder Scroll and uses it to peer through a window in time and learn the shout to combat Alduin. The player battles with Alduin, who then flees to Sovngarde, the Nordic afterlife, to gain strength by devouring the souls of deceased Nords.
The player summons and traps a dragon named Odahviing, and learns from him that Alduin has fled to Sovngarde through a portal located at an ancient fort called Skuldafn. Odahviing agrees to fly the player to Skuldafn, claiming Alduin has shown himself as weak and undeserving of leadership over the dragon race by fleeing from the Dragonborn. The player enters Sovngarde and travels to the Hall of Valor. There, they meet up with the three heroes of Nordic legend who defeated Alduin originally. With their help, the player defeats Alduin once and for all.
Development
Having completed work on Oblivion in 2006, Bethesda Game Studios began work on Fallout 3. It was during this time that the team began planning their next The Elder Scrolls game. From the outset, they had decided to set the new entry in the land of Skyrim, incorporating dragons into the main theme of the game.[17] Full development began following the release of Fallout 3 in 2008; the developers considered Skyrim a spiritual successor to both Fallout 3 and previous The Elder Scrolls games.[18] The game was developed by a team of roughly 100 people composed of new talent as well as of the series' veterans.[17] The production was supervised by Todd Howard, who has been the director of several titles released by Bethesda Softworks.[17]
Design
The team set the game in the province of Skyrim, designing it by hand. While similar in size to Oblivion's game world of Cyrodiil, the mountainous topography of the world inflates the game space and makes it more difficult to traverse than Cyrodiil, which was relatively flat.[16] In designing Skyrim's world, the team opted for a different approach to what was taken with Oblivion; art director Matt Carofano considered the 'epic-realism' of Skyrim's world design as a departure from Oblivion's generic representation of classic European fantasy lore.[8] Howard expressed the team's desire to re-encapsulate the 'wonder of discovery' of Morrowind's game world in Skyrim, as the return to the classic fantasy of Arena and The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall in Oblivion meant sacrificing a world with a unique culture.[19] As a way of creating diversity in the world, the team divided the world into nine sectors, known as holds, and attempted to make each hold feel topographically unique from another; in addition, the team wanted to reflect the socioeconomic background of the NPCs by making some locations elaborate and wealthy while others are poorer and lower-tech.[3]
Within Skyrim's universe is the use of 'dragon language'. The alphabet was constructed to look aesthetically dragon-like, hence the use of claw-like markings.[15]
The team sought to make each of the game's ten races feel unique; Howard considered the player's choice of race at the beginning of the game a more important decision than it had been in previous The Elder Scrolls games because the culture of Skyrim's world contains more racism. However, he reiterated that the player's choice of race does not have major game-affecting consequences as it simply adds 'flavor' in different NPCs' dispositions towards the player, and is not meant as a way of locking players out of particular quests.[20] Efforts to make Skyrim's world feel hand-crafted extended to the team abandoning the use of generated landscapes as they had done in Oblivion. While just one team member was charged with designing dungeons in Oblivion, Skyrim's 150 dungeons were designed by a group of eight people.[21]Skyrim features 244 quests, over 300 points of interest with a map marker and numerous unmarked locations.[22]
Engine
Skyrim is powered by Bethesda's Creation Engine, created specifically for Skyrim.[23][24] After Fallout 3's release, the team devised numerous design objectives to meet for Skyrim, and according to Howard, the team 'got all those done and kept going'.[20] Had the team not been able to meet their design goals with current hardware, they would have waited for the next generation and released Skyrim then,[25] but Howard felt that the technology of the time did not hold the team back at all.[20] The Creation Engine allows for numerous improvements in graphical fidelity over Bethesda's previous efforts. For example, the draw distance renders farther than in previous Elder Scrolls games; Howard provided an example where the player can stare at a small object such as a fork in detail, and then look up at a mountain and run to the top of it.[19] Dynamic lighting allows shadows to be created by any structure or item in the game world, and the Creation Engine allowed for greater detail in flora production than SpeedTree had in previous Bethesda games.[14] For example, with Bethesda's own technology, developers were able to give weight to the branches of trees, which affects how trees blow in the wind. In addition, the technology allows wind to affect the flow of water in channels such as rivers and streams.[4] Because of the large presence of snow in Skyrim's game world, the technological upgrades were applied to weather effects and allow for dynamic snow fall upon the terrain, instead of snow that was rendered as a textural effect in previous games.[4]
The team used Havok's Behavior toolset for character animation, which allows for a greater fluidity between the character's movements of walking, running and sprinting, and also increases the efficiency of the third-person camera option, which had been criticized in Oblivion.[4][26] The toolset allows interactions between the player and NPCs to take place in real time; in Oblivion, when the player went to interact with an NPC, time would freeze and the camera would zoom in on the NPC's face. In Skyrim, NPCs can move around and make body gestures while conversing with the player. Children are present in the game, and their presence is handled similarly to Fallout 3 in that they cannot be harmed by the player in any way,[14] since depictions of violence involving children in video games are controversial.[27]Skyrim uses the Radiant AIartificial intelligence system that was created for Oblivion, and it has been updated to allow NPCs to 'do what they want under extra parameters'.[13] The updated system allows for greater interaction between NPCs and their environments; NPCs can perform tasks such as farming, milling, and mining in the game world, and will react to each other.[28]

The team employed Jeremy Soule to compose the music for Skyrim, who previously worked on Morrowind and Oblivion. The game's main theme 'Dragonborn was recorded with a choir of over 30 people singing in the fictional dragon language.[29] Creative director Todd Howard envisioned the theme for Skyrim as The Elder Scrolls theme sung by a choir of barbarians. This became a reality when the idea was passed by Soule, who recorded the 30-man choir and layered three separate recordings to create the effect of 90 voices.[30] Bethesda's concept artist Adam Adamowicz created the Draconic language, and also developed a 34-character runic alphabet for the game.[15] He expanded the lexicon of Draconic as needed; Bruce Nesmith explained that words were introduced to the lexicon every time that the studio 'wanted to say something'.[13]
Bethesda released four audio CDs along with the game on November 11, 2011. The soundtrack to Skyrim is sold via Jeremy Soule's distributor DirectSong, and Soule autographed all physical copies ordered via DirectSong.[31] 'Day One' pre-orders from Amazon.de also included a five-track promotional Skyrim soundtrack sampler.[32] A digital version of the soundtrack was released via iTunes on January 31, 2013.[33]
The voice-over in the game included more than 70 actors and over 60,000 lines of dialogue.[34] Casting director and production supervisor Timothy Cubbison worked with the creative team at Bethesda Softworks to evaluate auditions and oversee the recordings.[35] The full cast consisted of three Academy Award nominees and several other high-profile actors including Max von Sydow, Christopher Plummer, Joan Allen, Michael Hogan, and Vladimir Kulich.[34]
Marketing and release
Skyrim was announced at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California, on December 11, 2010, on Spike's annual Video Game Awards; Howard appeared onstage during the awards and presented the announcement trailer, which introduced the game's story and revealed its '11–11–11' release date.[36] It was the cover story for the February 2011 issue of the Game Informer magazine, wherein journalist Matt Miller wrote a fifteen-page article that revealed the first details about the game's story and gameplay.[14] Asked about downloadable content (DLC) packages in a June 2011 interview, Howard expressed the team's intention to release DLC packages, having done so for previous releases; he revealed that it was the team's goal to release a lower number of DLC packages that were larger in content than those released for Fallout 3, as he felt that releasing a larger number of low-content packages was 'chaotic'.[37] Via a press release, the team announced that the first two planned DLC packages would release on the Xbox 360 via Xbox Live a month ahead of PCs and the PlayStation 3.[38] At the 2011 QuakeCon conference, the team unveiled Skyrim's collector's edition package. Bundled with a copy of the game is a map of the game world, a 12-inch figurine of Alduin, as well as a 200-page concept art book and a DVD feature about the making of Skyrim.[39]
In October 2011, pictures of many pages of the manual of the game were leaked,[40][41] later followed by footage from the introduction, revealing some more details.[42] By November 1, 2011, a copy of the Xbox 360 version had been leaked and made available through the Internet, allowing those with a hacked Xbox 360 to play Skyrim 10 days before its release.[43][44] In the Netherlands, the game has been available for purchase since November 7.[45] On November 10, stores in Australia began selling the game ahead of its November 11 release date.[46]
Re-releases and ports
A compilation package called The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Legendary Edition was released on June 4, 2013. It contains the version 1.9 patch and the three expansions, along with the main game.[47] On June 4, 2016, Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Special Edition, a remaster for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows.[48] It was released on October 28, 2016.[48] Windows players who owned the original game and all of its downloadable content on Steam were offered the Special Edition for free.[48]
In October 2016, the reveal trailer for Nintendo Switch featured gameplay of Skyrim on the console. At the time, it was reported that Bethesda only used the game for the reveal trailer and that it was not officially releasing on the Nintendo Switch. On January 13, 2017, Todd Howard confirmed that the game will come out on the Nintendo Switch, making it the first The Elder Scrolls title to be released on a Nintendo platform (not counting the Skyrim pinball adaptation that was part of the Bethesda Pinball collection, released in late 2016 for Zen Pinball 2, which was available for the Wii U), as well as the first game Bethesda has confirmed to be released for a Nintendo home console since Home Alone for the NES in 1991.[49] During Bethesda's E3 2017 showcase, it was revealed that the Nintendo Switch version will support Amiibo and the Joy-Conmotion controls.[50]
At E3 2017, Bethesda announced a PlayStation VR version of Skyrim for release in November 2017.[51] A standalone VR port of the game was released for PC on April 2, 2018, supporting the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.[52]
A parody of Skyrim's numerous ports and re-releases, titled Skyrim: Very Special Edition was released by Bethesda at their E3 2018 press conference for Amazon Alexa, with them also saying it would be also released for the Etch A Sketch, Motorolapagers and Samsung smart refrigerators.[53] The Alexa version was found to be a legitimate version of the game developed by Bethesda, playing off the joke that the studios had seemingly ported Skyrim to all possible platforms following its E3 2017 announcements.[54]
Spin-offs
While Skyrim was being ported to next-generation systems, Zen Studios also developed a virtualpinball adaptation of the game as part of the Bethesda Pinball collection, which became available as part of Zen Pinball 2, Pinball FX 2[55] and Pinball FX 3,[56] as well as a separate free-to-play app for iOS and Android mobile devices.[57] A Skyrim themed expansion for the virtualcard battle gameThe Elder Scrolls: Legends, titled Heroes of Skyrim, was released on June 29, 2017.[58]
Additional content
Downloadable content
Dawnguard was the first downloadable add-on for Skyrim, revolving around a battle between the Dawnguard and Clan Volkihar. The Dawnguard are a band of vampire hunters who rely on the use of their trademark crossbow weapons in their pursuit against Clan Volkihar, a family of vampires. Early in Dawnguard's quest line, players must choose which of the two factions to join forces with. Dawnguard adds new content to the game, including weapons, spells, and armor, and expands the abilities afforded to players who choose to become either a vampire or a werewolf. It also adds two new areas to explore outside of the mainland of Skyrim: the Soul Cairn (a plane of the realm of Oblivion) and the Forgotten Vale (a secluded glacial valley). Dawnguard released on the Xbox 360 in English-speaking territories on June 26, 2012, and in European countries in mid-July 2012.[59] It was released for Windows on August 2, 2012, via the digital distribution platform Steam.[60] Performance issues on the PlayStation 3 hampered Dawnguard's release on that platform. It was released on the PlayStation 3 on February 26, 2013, in North America, and on February 27, 2013, in Europe.[61]
Hearthfire was Skyrim's second add-on, which allows players to build houses and adopt children. Three plots of land are added to the game world which players can purchase. Once land is purchased, players build a small basic house, then select rooms to add on. The house and its additions are built from raw materials such as lumber and clay, which can be gathered or purchased. Players may also adopt up to two children and have them live in the home, along with the player's spouse.[62]Hearthfire was released for the Xbox 360 on September 4, 2012, and for Windows on October 4, 2012.[63] It was later released for PlayStation 3 on February 19, 2013, in North America, and February 20, 2013, in Europe.[64][65]
Dragonborn is the third and final add-on for Skyrim. It revolves around the player character's efforts to defeat Miraak, the first Dragonborn who has become corrupted and seeks to control the world. The add-on takes place on Solstheim, an island northeast of Skyrim which is presented as an open world. It adds new content to the game and allows players to ride on the backs of dragons, along with other shouts that can be learned exclusively from Solstheim. Dragonborn was released for the Xbox 360 on December 4, 2012,[66] for Windows on February 5, 2013, and for PlayStation 3 on February 12, 2013.[67][68]
In April 2013, Bethesda announced via their blog that they were 'moving on' from Skyrim and preparing to work on other projects. They added that they would only be releasing 'minor updates' for the game.[69]
Mods
A wide variety of official and fan-created 'mods', short for modifications, are available for Skyrim, which are generally made using the packaged Creation Kit. These mods are distributed freely on file-sharing sites such as Nexus Mods, and are also officially aggregated via the Steam Workshop's controlled content distribution mechanism. The mods may include features such as significantly enhanced visuals, lighting, and textures, overhauled weather systems, gameplay tweaks, new characters and locations, user interface updates, and more.[70][71]
The first official Skyrim modification was The Fall of the Space Core, Vol. 1, created by Bethesda in collaboration with Valve Corporation. It causes a fictional device known as the Space Core from Valve's video game Portal 2 to fall from the sky and land where the player can recover it. The Space Core acts as a non-player character voiced by Nolan North which follows the player around the world of Skyrim and dispenses space-related comments.[72][73]
Enderal: The Shards of Order is a total conversion mod of Skyrim developed by SureAI as a sequel to Nehrim: At Fate's Edge.[74] It was released in July 2016,[75] initially in German only. An English version was released August 16, 2016.[76]

Skyrim received critical acclaim upon release. The removal of the character class system, present in previous The Elder Scrolls entries, was well received. Billy Shibley of Machinima's Inside Gaming and Charles Onyett of IGN praised its removal because it allowed players to experiment with different skills without having to make decisions about a class early in the game.[90][95] John Bedford of Eurogamer stated that by removing the character class system, the game tailored itself to players who wanted to build an all-around character, while still letting other players specialize in a preferred play-style.[96] Steve Butts of The Escapist considered the addition of perks to the character advancement system 'a great method to make your character feel even more unique and personal'.[97] Kevin VanOrd of GameSpot praised the way perks allowed for the player's preferred skills to become more powerful over time, stating that the perk system 'forms around the way you play, but allows for tweaking so that you retain a sense of control'.[88] The user interface was also praised by reviewers for its accessibility;[88][90][98] Bedford complimented its 'elegant design' which succeeded Oblivion's comparatively complex interface.[96]
The art style of the game world drew acclaim from many reviewers, who welcomed the departure from Oblivion's Cyrodiil. Jason Schreier of Wired described the land of Skyrim as a 'Viking-inspired treasure trove of flavor and charm', noting its contrast to Cyrodiil, which he considered generic by comparison.[94] The Staff at Edge magazine described Cyrodiil as a 'patchwork of varying terrains', praising the more consistent design of Skyrim.[99] Shibley praised 'the lack of copy-and-paste level design that's plagued Bethesda's previous games, .. giving a lived-in and handcrafted look to the world'.[95] Bedford noted that the improved graphical fidelity over Oblivion allowed the game world to feel more lifelike, praising the 'misty mountain setting, complete with swirling fog and high-altitude snowstorms'.[96] An editor for PC PowerPlay praised the diversity of the dungeon design.[100] Andrew Reiner of Game Informer cited criticisms that Oblivion faced for repetitive dungeons, noting that 'the composition of each dungeon is largely unique and individualized' in Skyrim. He also favored the design choice to have a quick route out of a dungeon leading from its last room, eliminating a problem he identified Oblivion as having, where the player would clear a dungeon and then have to go all the way back to the beginning to exit it.[98] Many reviewers praised the large number of things to do in the world outside of the main story.[88][96][98] Tom Francis of PC Gamer noted that it was difficult to explore the world without becoming distracted by things to do, stating that, 'it's hard to walk for a minute in any direction without encountering an intriguing cave, a lonely shack, some strange stones, a wandering traveller, [or] a haunted fort'.[92]
Reviewers welcomed the ability to dual-wield weapons and magic.[90] An editor for PC PowerPlay felt that the dual-wielding ability 'transforms the tactical scope of each combat encounter'.[100] Shibley noted that the dual-wielding option gave the player more freedom to experiment with combat, writing that, 'the ability to apply a spell to each hand .. generates huge potential for getting creative with your spell combinations'.[95] However, reviewers were critical of the melee combat, feeling that it had not been improved upon as much as other areas in the game.[88][95][96][99]Justin McElroy of Joystiq felt that 'what should be thrilling fights in Skyrim are often weighed down by the same clunky melee system Oblivion suffered from'.[101] Onyett described the melee combat as 'flat' and 'floaty', and that 'many times it feels like you're slicing air instead of a mythical creature's flesh'.[90] Francis agreed with this sentiment, stating that, 'too much of the time, you wave your weapon around and enemies barely react to the hits'.[92]
Many reviewers noted glitches while playing Skyrim,[88][90][94][99][102] some game-breaking.[92][95][98][101][103] Nick Cowen of The Guardian pointed out that the game's glitches were a trade-off for its ambitious scope, and that he had experienced glitches that forced him to reload earlier saves.[103]Edge began their review by criticizing the lack of polish, while still acknowledging many areas in the game which made up for it.[99] In addition, the quality of the main quest divided some reviewers. While Reiner praised the main quest as 'superbly penned' and 'Bethesda's best effort to date',[98] Butts and Francis criticized the fact that the story was delivered primarily through conversations and quest journals, rather than through the player's own interactions.[92][97] While the dragon battles were well-received, some reviewers observed flaws in the AI for dragons. Onyett pointed out their 'predictable attack patterns',[90] which Francis agreed with, claiming that 'fighting them never changes much: you can just ignore them until they land, then shoot them from a distance when they do'.[92] Reiner felt that, due to the repetitiveness of their attack patterns, the dragons were not challenging enough for low-level players.[98]Edge pointed out a curve in difficulty for players who favored archery and magic, as dragons were difficult to attack while airborne.[99]
Technical issues
At the launch of Skyrim, many technical issues of varying severity were reported. Some examples include a texture down-scaling issue on the Xbox 360 version when the game was run from the hard drive;[104] crashes, slowdown and frame rate issues on the PlayStation 3 version when save files exceeded 6 MB,[105] commonly occurring due to extended gameplay times;[106] and various crashes and slowdowns on the Windows version. According to Skyrim's director Todd Howard, the notion that bugs were caused by 'restrictive RAM'[107] is incorrect. Howard said, 'It's literally the things you've done in what order and what's running.'[108]
Since release, several patches were published to address technical issues and improve overall gameplay. Patch 1.2 was released on November 29, 2011, to fix some of the game's issues;[109] however, some players reported new bugs in the game following the patch, including more frequent game crashes.[110] Patch 1.3 was released on December 7, 2011, to improve stability, further address known issues, and fix some problems that were introduced in version 1.2.[111] Patch 1.4 was released on February 1, 2012, for the PC. Another list of issues and bugs were addressed in this patch, and Skyrim launcher support for Skyrim Workshop (PC) was provided.[112] Patch 1.5 was released on March 20, 2012, for the PC. Numerous bugs were fixed, and new archery/spellcasting kill cams were included.[113] On April 12, 2012, Bethesda announced that Kinect support would be coming for the Xbox 360 version of Skyrim, with over 200 voice commands.[114] Patch 1.6 was released on May 24, 2012, for the PC. This includes a new feature: mounted combat.[115] Patch 1.7 was released on July 30, 2012, for the PC,[116] and 1.8 was released on November 1, 2012, for the PC.[117] These two introduced only minor bugfixes. Patch 1.9 was released on March 18, 2013. In addition to providing various bug fixes, this patch also added new features, most prominently the new 'Legendary' difficulty, and 'Legendary' skills, which effectively remove the level cap.[118]
An unofficial community patch attempts to fix remaining issues unattended by the official patches.[119][120] It lists hundreds[121] of gameplay, quest, and other bugs that it fixes in the game and its add-ons.[122][123]
Sales
During the first day of release, Steam showed over 230,000 people playing Skyrim concurrently.[124] Within two days of the game's launch, 3.4 million physical copies were sold. Of those sales, 59% were for the Xbox 360, 27% for the PS3, and 14% for the PC.[125] In the first week of release, Bethesda stated that 7 million copies of the game had been shipped to retailers worldwide, and that total sales through the following Wednesday were expected to generate an estimated US$450 million.[126][127] By December 16, 2011, this had risen to 10 million copies shipped to retail and around US$620 million.[128] Additionally, Valve stated that it was the fastest selling game to date on their Steam platform.[128] Steam's statistics page showed the client breaking a five million user record by having 5,012,468 users logged in on January 2, 2012. The total number of sold copies on the PC platform is difficult to confirm because Valve does not publicly publish digital sales.[129] Shortly after its release, Skyrim was the most-played game on Steam by a huge margin, with double the number of players as Team Fortress 2, the second-placed game.[130] In the United Kingdom, Skyrim was the 9th best selling title of 2012.[131] In June 2013, Bethesda announced that over 20 million copies of the game had been sold.[132] Regarding sales on the PC, Todd Howard stated in an interview with Rock, Paper, Shotgun that, 'Skyrim did better than we've ever done on PC by a large, large number. And that's where the mods are. That feeds the game for a long time.'[133] Electronic Entertainment Design and Research, a market research firm, estimates that the game has sold 22.7 million copies worldwide.[134] In November 2016, Howard confirmed that Skyrim had sold 30 million copies since its release in 2011.[135]
